Our Leesburg, VA Preventive Dentistry Services

Many patients choose to only visit the dentist when they are experiencing some kind of damage, pain or discomfort. While our team of skilled doctors at Mayo Family Dentistry is always here to help in these situations, we would prefer to stop oral health problems from ever occurring. With in-depth check-ups, thorough cleanings, and proper radiographs, our centrally located Leesburg office in Loudoun County can provide lifelong smiles for you and your family.  We pride ourselves on educating our patients and stress that prevention is the best defense against dental disease.  When you know and understand how to properly care for your healthy teeth and gums, you can maintain them for many years.

Check-ups & Cleanings

Routine check-ups and cleanings at our Leesburg office are very important for all of our patients. These appointments allow our doctors to closely inspect the oral cavity, teeth, and gums for any signs of damage or disease.  Our hygienists gently clean deposits of plaque and tartar from your teeth while ensuring a comfortable experience.  Our staff and practice focuses heavily on patient education and homecare instructions for each individual patient.

Dental Sealants

When young children are still learning to brush and floss daily, it can be difficult for them to keep the deep pits and grooves you typically find on molars in the back of their mouth clean.  Dental sealants are applied to healthy permanent molars to prevent cavities from developing. This protective coating is bonded directly over the chewing surfaces of teeth serving as an extra layer of defense against damaging bacteria and sticky food particles.  This is a painless procedure.  We typically recommend dental sealants for children, especially prior to braces when it is very difficult to keep all of the teeth clean.

NIghtguards

Bruxism (also known as teeth grinding) is a common habit that many patients are unaware of because of its tendency to occur while you are sleeping.  Some patients will admit to spontaneously clenching throughout the day at work, the gym, or in traffic!  Damage and wear to the teeth from excessive grinding can trigger headaches and pain in the muscles of the face.  Every patient in our practice is evaluated for the presence of damage or excessive wear during an initial exam.  When necessary, custom appliances can be fabricated and designed for each individual patient to address the appropriate needs and concerns.

Sportsguards

All of the doctors at Mayo Family Dentistry grew up playing sports.  Are you or your child an athlete? Do you participate in events that include the possibility of contact with a hard surface or another player? The last thing you want to be worrying about while competing in the big game is whether or not your smile will escape unscathed.  We recommend that athletic patients of all ages wear a customized mouthguard so that direct hits or injuries are minimized.  Whether your child is playing youth basketball or full contact karate, protection is always smart.  In fact, some studies have shown that mouthguards can even help lessen the severity of concussions.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is a condition that’s characterized by a blocked airway and constant pauses in breathing with interruption of sleep throughout the night. While this may not sound too bad at first, it can lead to daytime exhaustion, severe headaches, memory problems, heartburn, hypertension and diabetes. If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, it is very important to coordinate any treatment with the sleep study physician. While a dentist may seem like an odd choice for dealing with a sleep-related condition, we can actually provide FDA approved oral appliances that can provide benefit in mild to moderate apnea cases.  It is crucial for patients to undergo an additional sleep study after appliance therapy to determine its efficacy.

Pediatrics

We love welcoming the youngest members of your family here at Mayo Family Dentistry, and our team does everything in our power to create a comfortable, positive, and enjoyable experience for all children. By teaching them early in life about oral hygiene, we hope to instill good habits that will last for years to come. Check-ups and cleanings will always be personalized to fit what your son or daughter can handle with gentle preventive measures and show-and-tell techniques. All of our doctors have children and understand how fun it is to take them to the doctors’ office!  Toddlers, teenagers, even children with special needs – we’re happy to see them all!

Oral Cancer Screenings

No one deserves to experience the severe damage and diminished quality of life that oral cancer can cause. Here at Mayo Family Dentistry, Dr. Stephen Mayo, Dr. Ryan Mayo, and Dr. Gregory Mayo examine all patients thoroughly with head and neck exams and medical history reviews. With the help of regular oral cancer screenings, our team can help reduce the possibility of disease development and educate patients on lifestyle and behavior that may increase the risk for cancer.
